Penguins Day 2!

Today was another fun-filled penguin day in our room! I am so loving it and my kids are having a total blast! We used a few more activities from Caitlin Clabby's "All About Penguins" unit. The first was a penguin labeling activity. I made a cute little penguin out of paper and glued it to poster board. The adorable words were included in Caitlin's unit. I put the words up on the projector and let them try to sound them out. When someone knew what it was, they would raise their hand and come up to label the penguin (the kids actually named him - his name is Icy Pop). Sorry for the obnoxious magnets. That poster was surprisingly thick and I couldn't get it to stay on the board!

After our labeling, we read another penguin book. Today it was "Little Penguin: The Emperor of Antarctica" by Johnathan London.

We followed up our story by adding a few things to our KWL chart under the "L" section. The kids also heard some of our word splash words, so we added a few definitions to that as well! For writing, we used a page from the penguin unit. At the top it asked for 3 fun facts that they learned about penguins. They were soooo excited and really enjoyed sharing what they learned! Many of them wrote about regurgitation. They are quite fascinated by that! HA! I even had a few bragging that their parents do that for them at home. I am seriously praying that is not true. It was awesome to see them using the word splash and labeling chart as a resource for vocab!

Today we also got new team names! Every time we switch tables, the kids get to name their own groups. I have had some ridiculous names over the years, but they just loooove it. I make a fun poster to go along with their names and hang them above their tables - no matter how funky the name choices are! Here are our new team names:

Tomorrow we will have some more penguin fun! I can't believe it is already Wednesday (though I wish I was saying 'I can't believe it is already Friday). OH! And I have to share some exciting news! I received an email from a company wanting to use my fonts for their logo! Woo hoo! I'm so excited to be getting my fonts out there - how fun!

I'm sending you all hugs!! Hope you had a terrific Tuesday!

  1. Your penguin is adorable! When I taught first and third grade, I had my teams choose names, but I have never done that in kindergarten. I think I should. I know the kids would get a kick out of it!

Congrats on getting your fonts out there. I am so happy for you!

BTW, we started your handwriting pack today. I read the students the story and we talked about the first "tidy tip". They are so excited for the handwriting fairy to show up with neat treats! The look on their faces was priceless!! :)

    1. Thanks so much girl! Yea, they totally loooove naming their teams. They just about die when I put up the new signs. It's hilarious. I am sooo thrilled to hear that they are enjoying the handwriting fairy! My kids get so excited when she visits our room and leaves some "fairy dust" (glitter) on their desk with their treat! One of my kiddos even asked for a small baggy to bring the glitter home with him because he wanted to savor the magic (his words, I swear)!

  3. What a great ideas! I think that is awesome that you let them choose their own group name. I'm going to have to keep that in mind. And that penguin you made for labeling the penguin is adorable!
